As of recent years, it is evident that the spread of the West Nile Virus has increased significantly.  West Nile Virus cases have been known to the regions of Africa, Europe, Oceania, and as of recent North America.  Recent outbreaks of West Nile virus encephalitis in humans have occurred in Algeria, Romania, Czech Republic, Congo, Russia, the United States, Canada, Israel, and Greece.

All residents who live in areas where otubreaks of the West Nile virus have occurred are more susceptible to become infected.  A person's risk of contracting West Nile is low, and less than 1% of those infected develop serious illness from the virus.  People who are at the age of 50 or older are more likely to experience the highest risk of severe disease.   elderly people are more susceptible to contracting the West Nile virus becuase of their weak immune systems.  In general, everyone is at risk for contracting the West Nile Virus which is why it is important for everyone to protect themselves to prevent disease and infecton.

One in 150 West Nile virus infections results in encephalitis or meningitis, and the mortality rate from severe illness is 3-15%.  It is very important to take precautionary actions in order to prevent contracting the West Nile Virus.  Those over the age of 75 should particuarly take note of this.
